Great upgrade for CR-10 - ASA and ABS printing now handy

** Please note that you will need soldering equipment and basic electrical skills for this upgrade, as well as a solid state relay (required) and an insulating pad (recommended) ** I wanted it to be I could with Filament ASA for small technical parts, but the standard platform on my Creality CR-10 didn't get hot enough. I found a YouTube video (search "cr-10s heated bed upgrade") with detailed instructions and decided to give it a try. Although my career spans 35 years of electronics design, the printer does not come with a schematic or wiring diagram (although they may be available) and here you are dealing with both mains voltage and high temperatures. The heated bed upgrade went well and I was lucky enough to find ASA settings for Simplify3D online. After creating a new FFF profile for the ASA, my son and I printed a 3" garden gnome using 1.75mm black ASA filament. The pressure was great, with a very stable bed temperature. After the print was completed, the temperature dropped much more slowly than before the update; I think the insulating pad helped. I also did a test print without the case on the printer, and the printer itself is 7 or 8 feet from the active ceiling fan. Take-away items: (1) soldering equipment/skills, a few inches of wire and a solid state relay (2) an insulating pad for the underside is highly recommended. (3) Remember you are converting a low voltage DC circuit to mains voltage - BE CAREFUL AND CHECK EVERYTHING! I am very happy with the update - highly recommended.

Pros
  • Absolutely amazing!
Cons
  • Not bad, but...
