Expensive but worth it for its versatility

I've had my eye on this lens for a long time but was hesitant to spend money on it. I bought it a few months ago and have been using it almost exclusively on my D90 ever since. This is a great lens and I know this is the lens to add to my photography gear now. I agree with previous reviewers, there are two main reasons to buy this lens. First, if you're shooting in low light, this lens works incredibly well. I was at my kids' school the other day and took some music photos for the yearbook. The hall manager was away all day, so we couldn't turn on the stage lights. We only used house lights and very few stage lights, so it was very dark and I wasn't optimistic about getting decent shots. But at full aperture the lens was able to produce sharp, crisp images with decent exposure. The other main reason for buying this lens is of course the bokeh. It's very smooth and beautiful. However, this lens requires some practice and skill when shooting wide open. Even at f/1.4 this is a very sharp lens but you can't go wrong with focusing as the depth of field is very shallow. Another thing I really like about this lens is its size and weight. It's strong and well built, but not overly heavy or unwieldy for my D90. I feel completely comfortable with this lens. Sometimes people suggest going with the 70-200mm or instead of the 85mm, but for me this lens fits much better and is more versatile. Yes, the 70-200mm lens also has great bokeh, more versatile range, and may be better suited for indoor sports. But its size and weight are the main disadvantage for me. I wouldn't use the 70-200mm for casual portraits, as a touring lens, or for everyday casual shooting. In my opinion, the 85mm lens is great for all of these situations. There are a few downsides to this lens - sometimes it's too long for the DX body, and when shooting wide open there are problems with chromatic aberration and flare. If you're considering buying this lens, do your homework and decide if it's right for you. For me a very versatile lens with excellent performance that I am completely satisfied with.
