The device is made of stainless steel and washing in the dishwasher is a complete success for me. I couldn't get potatoes through the little hole and I'm a big guy. The medium to large strainers were much better and I opted for the medium strainer when I preferred mashed potatoes. A sieve with large holes will still let the potato chunks through, risking a mashed potato that requires a lot of beating. The device is quite easy to use, but to load the hopper you need to cut a hot potato into quarters or thirds. I've only used this for mashed potatoes so can't speak to other uses. As strong as this type of instrument usually is.
