for example multiple VLAN trunks through one port from another.

If you want to do something remotely complex in addition to dummy switching, such as For example, bundling multiple VLANs through a port from another switch, and then splitting them across multiple ports on that switch, just avoid it and save yourself the hassle. It doesn't work with multiple tagged VLANs on a single port, I can only get it to work as a dummy layer 2 switch with an untagged uplink. It also has a terrible web interface, Netgear's new switches have a better user experience and actually work as advertised. The only good thing about this switch is that you can access the Broadcom Fastpath CLI via telnet, but that's useless as anything you can configure there, like bundling multiple tagged VLANs onto a single uplink, simply won't work. Not only does the switch not get an IP address, it also fails to connect other interfaces to downstream devices. It only works as a dummy switch on an untagged port. It doesn't seem to be able to handle multiple tagged uplinks. *Maybe* this is an issue with their old beat up web UI, which treats objects as an array and assumes that the order of elements is preserved in the UI, but this is not the case with any modern web browser. Worse, when I updated the firmware, access to the Fastpath CLI was broken, so it's now literally impossible to properly configure this switch without using IE6, which I oppose. Garbage. I'm keeping it to myself to use it as a dummy layer 2 switch because it's too late to bring it back, but I suggest you avoid it if you think you'll be using VLANs.

Pros
  • Feels good
Cons
  • Expensive insurance
