A Less Expensive Way to "Real " Paint

I've just gotten back into painting after a long hiatus and my efforts aren't great. (Nevertheless? <-- I'm trying to stay positive!) The shock of the stickers hit me hard at the price of the prepared canvases and stretcher bars. Without a circle of friends to buy in bulk, I was a bit stingy when it came to having the right surfaces to paint on. Super small canvases, super cheap, painted over and whatever else comes to mind. This canvas backing from Fredrix works way better for me than any other intermediate solution, especially for acrylic. The "paper" is thick, pristine, and has a very similar feel (to the touch and feel) to real canvas. Working with this notebook, I've learned a few tricks to get the most out of this medium: * Carefully tear out each page. You may need to score the pages down the middle of the notebook to leave a clean tear * Do you paint wet on wet? Glue the paper to the board. You can be as cool as me and pull yourself together. Bulldog clamps also work, but I find them visually distracting. The shutter prevents the paper from curling during operation. * If you do mostly dry work, you can use a paperweight instead. *I have found that acrylics require more paint than usual to get a pigmented background with this paper. If you know you need a darker background, I apply it first, almost like a second primer. Saves a lot of frustration later. The only thing I don't like about Fredix canvas rugs is that they don't match my walls. How fun would that be?
