First of all, I'm an amateur, not a machinist or myself. I'm not so interested in accuracy as in "change" in length. The picture shows how I (temporarily) attached it to my CNC machine using the 3D design I created. When using CNC machines and 3D printers, it is important that the distance between the chisel or print nozzle is the same throughout the platform. On a newly built CNC, or after replacing a junk board, it is common practice to do a "surface finish" over the entire surface to verify this. I haven't had a chance to verify accuracy and didn't care anyway. Here I get slight depth differences from one side of the carving to the other. I checked alignment by simply manually dragging the router/dial indicator node across the workspace. I didn't find anything so I have to look for another reason. I intend to use this dial gauge on my 3D printers after developing other mounting options. 3D printer platforms are often leveled by adjusting "knobs" under the bed until all angles are equal. It's a bit of a hassle because every time you adjust a knob you have to go back and recheck the rest by sliding a piece of paper between the nozzle and the print bed. I know there are some "automatic", electronic level checking add-ons, but they tend to be more expensive and require wiring and software changes. I love the fact that you can switch between millimeters and inches. I use mms on my 3D printers and inches on my CNC. This is probably because CNC parts tend to be larger than 3D parts. So when I'm designing for my CNC I'd rather see 12 inches than something like 300mm. I also like the fact that the dial indicator has 2 back faces. The pre-installed back is flat, but you can easily swap it out for a "standard" back. The standard backplate would make it more difficult for me to use, but I believe it gives other users more flexibility. I've had two non-digital dial gauges for years, but I rarely use them because of the back mounting plate and it's quite difficult (for me at least) to reset them and understand what they're reading. I can't find anything I don't like about it. The quality was good and it comes with a fairly good plastic case.
