Review on LG 32UN650-W 32-Inch 3840x2160P Borderless Monitor with Adaptive Sync, Anti-Glare Screen, High Dynamic Range (HDR) by Ken Morton

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Not really VESA compatible. Good rich colors, not as garish as my old Dell U3219Q screen.

I bought this LQ monitor after my Dell U3219Q screen died prematurely after an angry person smashed the screen - otherwise it has performed well for the past two years. This monitor has richer colors than the Dell monitor, but when watching movies on this monitor, the immediate feeling was that all edges appeared less sharp than on the Dell monitor. The monitor is now in HDR mode, which seems to give the best colours, but disables the ability to change the sharpness setting - you have to set your own mode to change the sharpness - this improves the sharpness but then you have to manually play with all the other settings to get the desired color. The main complaint I have is the supposedly VESA compatible stand that comes with this monitor. I didn't like the included stand, as I'm used to placing a small soundbar directly under the monitor (this monitor has its own speakers, but there's no quick and easy way to turn off the speakers and just listen to headphones privately while the soundbar has a simple on/off button), and this monitor's two legs interfere with the soundbar, as opposed to the Dell stand's flat base. The LG stand also doesn't allow rotation into picture mode instead of the default landscape mode, unlike the Dell U3219Q stand. The LG stand allows tilting and height adjustment. So I figured I'd just replace the LG stand with this monitor for the old Dell stand - right? Compatibility with the VESA standard should mean that it's a simple switch. no As you can see from the attached images, the rear mount of this LG monitor is not VESA compatible. The square VESA mount insert has ROUNDED corners, is about 1/16" smaller on three sides, and finally, fatally, the slots for attaching the two bottom metal hook plates are misplaced, too far apart. compared to the Dell mount. To solve the first two problems, I took my fine oscillating saw, cut off the corners and shaved 1/16 inch from three sides of the mounting plate on the Dell stand before coming to an abrupt stop when I saw that the bottom hooks of the Dell mounting plate would never fit into the slots on the back of the LG monitor because the LG slots are too far apart. Check out the pictures to get a better idea of what these three problems look like. I'm pretty sure the Dell mount is VESA compliant and this LG monitor is not VESA compliant.

Pros
  • The overall brightness, 4K color depth and sharpness of UHD make it a good value for the money.
Cons
  • Ghosting: This is when traces of motion or images remain on the display after an object has been moved or removed.
