Agree with other reviewers to practice with water first. You can figure out how to fill a pump and, more importantly, how to apply paint to a brush without splattering. It was the perfect tool for touching up a 3,000+ foot home that we were about to sell. It is better to carry a brush and a paint can with less dirt (no drips). I turned up the brush and slowly loosened 3 dots per brush and then painted. The fact that it's an edger makes it even better as corners or window sills could easily be touched up. To prolong its life you should clean it after each use, before the paint dries, but with water-based paint this is a cinch (rinse the brush under the faucet, fill a cup of water in the sink, give water into the pump and rinse a few times, then turn on the brush with a full pump and rinse the brush several times). This way I was able to use it for several days without any problems (and still do). Specifically, after filling the pump with paint, I wiped the spout before putting the brush on to keep it from dripping and the brush from sticking when removed. And to fill the pump, hold the lever and pull the handle back; After the paint is applied, don't forget to release the lever and the paint will stay inside.
