The water pump pulley shaft on my E46 broke leaving a mess under the hood (belt missing, engine spinning, wheels not moving). The part is not cheap, but it was recommended as part of the revival of the cooling system (I have 115,000 km). I've been using it for a few months, there were no problems with performance and noise. Apply a small dab of anti-seize to the internal threads and do not overtighten with your choice of 32mm wrench. General knowledge: It can take a while because the space is very tight, but at some point you get stuck.
