Review on πŸšͺ Milescraft 1213 Complete Door Mortising: Ultimate Solution for Precision Door Hinge Installation by Jesus Gallagher

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Roughly designed and badly built. better than nothing.

I'm an experienced wood carver but new to hanging doors. As there are no other door hangers to compare this to, maybe I'm being too harsh. However, this jig is what you would expect from a "cheap" jig - crude design and poor construction. Others have already commented on the quality of construction. I'll focus on the design. 1) To determine the distance between the hinges and the front of the door, attach a cam to the front. But the cam flexes quite a bit, giving an error margin of almost 1/16 inch in the pivot insertion position; 2) The guides provided by the device for the vertical positioning of the hinges only work outside the central position of the hinges. The most accurate approach to determining the location of the hinges on the door is to transfer markings from the hinges already mounted on the door. But these marks give you the position of the edge of the loop, not its center. Back to pencil and ruler. this. it does not work; 3) The same measurement references are not along the door hinge, which means the distance you measure by hooking the tape at the top of the door will always be too large. will be different for each hinge as the angle from the top of the door is different for each hinge position; 4) Once you've determined the correct position of the bracket, you need to drill holes and screw it to the edge of the door! Inaccuracies in hand drilling show up in template alignment - compounded by the fact that the screw holes in the metal plate are not recessed. When you're done, both the door stub and door gap turn into Swiss cheese from abandoned screw holes; 5) Finally, the mount doesn't offer anything at all to help with adjusting the depth of the cutter. The shape of the device makes it difficult to set the initial depth. If you need accuracy at depth, be prepared for a process of trial and error.

Pros
  • Easy to use inlay template with strong steel frame
Cons
  • Something different
