The carbon slips in a metal or carbon vise, you can tighten it but you risk breaking the carbon. The carbon paste ensures that you don't have to over-tighten to get a firm grip. I switched from a Prologo saddle and while I got sore after most long rides, I never felt like my saddle was lacking in quality. When I saw this saddle I realized that it is much better than my previous saddle. I rode 50 miles today without much pain in my buttocks. I also have an R1 carbon seatpost which helps dampen vibration and keep the saddle firmly in place.
