All the handheld microscopes I've tried were barely up to the task Insufficient lighting for a good view of the sample and cheap plastic optics. With this device, the light is positioned in such a way that the sample is NOT ILLUMINATED when switched on. You have to manually hold the scope over the object while trying to keep it steady enough to focus through the cheap plastic optics. NOT suitable for children. Take a look at Carson MicroBrite 20x-40x for kids. The light is placed much better and the stable base has a slide holder. Another big plus is that the backlight only turns on when the button is held down. So the child doesn't have to remember to turn it off to save batteries.
