It never hurts to look it up. Homeowners often bite off more than they can chew. Not knowing what they are doing is not an obstacle. It's easy to mix up the wires. Wiring is assumed to be color coded. White goes to the larger square. Black moves to a smaller square. Bare copper goes to the third pin. It has to be reliable. For a sufficiently motivated fool with power tools, nothing is reliable. I checked the extension cord my wife would use. The previous owner missed the outlet. The socket was ok. It was a 30 year old extension cord. I've been using it for years, never know if I've dodged a bullet. It's always nice to be able to test ground fault sockets.
