With Fall season right around the corner, decided to get this OTA DVR as a backup for our Directv for local channels. Satellite reception suffers (excessive pixelation) every year when snowfall is significant.Numerous positive reviews and the very affordable price from ebay, this was a low cost/risk purchase.Pros:- easy install- signal is not compressed resulting in excellent video quality that's slightly better than satellite- recordings can be pre-programmed- Digital audio- Tuner reception is better than the internal tuner of our 55" Sony XBR flatscreen- reception strength, program guide, pre-programmed recordings are viewable- ability to SKIP unwanted channels (e.g. QVC) when surfing- with USB storage connected, pause live viewing is available- Recording quality is exactly like LIVE programmingCONS:- single tuner disallows viewing other channels while recording- if you pause watching a recording to watch a live show, when returning, it starts from the beginning, not where you left off- unit gets warm- remote buttons are small- instruction manual can be misleading. The solution was to fiddle around with the unit and got it all figured out in a couple of hours. Text is pretty tiny to read. Seller can improve this.- won't work with Logitech HUBTips:- use a dedicated external hard drive for recordings. Hooked up a 2.5" WD 1TB via USB. Make sure you use the unit to FORMAT to ensure operational compatibility. Prior to formatting, recording was inconsistent. After formatting, all my pre-scheduled recordings occurred without any hitches.Customer service responds swiftly to Email. They answered all my queries and solved my initial recording glitches (recommended to FORMAT the HD).For now, cord cutting is not an option as I NEED the NFL ticket. Nevertheless, if football is not your priority, consider shelling out the minimal bucks for this very efficient and affordable OTA DVR. A TiVo may perform better it's operational cost is 10'x more.
