Good watch for beginner runners

A few weeks ago I started running regularly (3-4 times a week, only 15 miles a week at the moment) so I consider myself a beginner runner and don't need all the bells and whistles in a running watch that may be needed by an experienced runner. This watch does its job well. What I like: Light watch, no extra weight on the wrist which would be a problem on long runs, the display is clearly visible even in direct sunlight, the watch has the data I need like heart rate, cadence, pace, speed, distance etc. It has two customizable screens so I can organize my data however I want - I can program workouts on Garmin Connect and then send those workouts to my watch. Workouts can be programmed for intervals, distance, time, pace or heart rate. Then when I run, the watch keeps me in a predetermined range and alerts me if I run slower/faster, for example, or if my heart rate is out of range. Really nice feature. Garmin Connect saves all my run data (when I upload it from the watch and I can upload data via my smartphone), the data can be viewed/analyzed later. There isn't anything I really dislike but a few things I think are worth mentioning: - Sometimes it takes a few minutes for the watch to lock onto the satellites, I mean 5-7 minutes even if I was using the day before ran them - There are only three options that can appear on any user screen. So if I want to see, for example, pace, distance, cadence and heart rate at the same time, I have to switch between the screens. However, this is not a big problem, more of an inconvenience. Overall I really like this watch, it helps me organize my training better and later I can analyze how I'm doing. UPDATE: Subtract a star. Just ran with this watch on a cloudy day. Well, at the beginning of the run the watch dropped the signal quite often, then everything seemed fine, but when I downloaded the data after the workout, it turned out that there was no change in elevation or pace for 40-50 minutes, and I was working all the time - he didn't write the data right or something? UPDATE 2: In case anyone is wondering, this watch and chest strap just survived an (accidental) machine wash. Still works (tried it on the run after the accident)

Pros
  • The heart rate monitor is a chest strap sold separately.
Cons
  • Questionable purchase for seniors
