Review on Record A151 Malleable Adjustable Spokeshave by Anferny Pineda

Revainrating 2 out of 5

However, it has some good qualities.

I was happy to find some new Record razors in addition to the five old razors that were heavily used in my school shop. These look just like the old ones. I have ordered two. One had a very large throat, which might make sense as a mod, but it shouldn't. Then I realized that the knife bed is so narrow that it cannot be adjusted sideways. It took 20 minutes of filing on the sides to fix it. The other razor looked fine until I discovered that one of the blade adjustment nuts had stripped off and the adjustment screw was not gripping at all. I found a nut on an old spoke that fits the threads, but is much smaller, leaves a lot of play in adjustment, and just looks "wrong". Why should I be looking for parts for a brand new tool? The benefit of these razors, even after the manufacturing flaws have been fixed, is that the screw cap is strong, unlike other similar razors on the market that use stamped sheet metal. The blade appears to be properly tempered, not cheap. I'll keep these tools because I need them and with some attention they should be fine. Record used to be a fine maker of quality tools, many of which, like this razor, were based on the superb Stanley tools from the golden age of metal hand tools. Irwin using the record name should do better. Two instruments, each with significant but distinct flaws. Not good, especially for the price they offer. It would be nice if Irwin Record offered to replace this bad adjustment screw. I don't think they read these reviews.
