Review on ๐Ÿ”ช Shun DM0816 Hinoki Cutting Board, Medium: Enhance Precision and Style in Your Kitchen by Kerry Johnson

Mildew, warp, fall apart

EDIT: I wanted to give Shun another shot and bought a new board to replace the horrible board I had before. Already cracked. Immediate return, never buy another Shun product again. The board started falling apart within a month of use. This board has two pieces of wood along the short edges, probably to prevent warping. I store all my boards by the edges to allow both cut surfaces to dry, but of course you can only store this board by the *long* edges or those reinforcements will fall out. Mine fell apart after a month of ownership. It seems that they are not even glued but held in place by friction. The expansion/contraction of natural wood from the water will eventually force them out. Now it warps regularly, and the other end seems to come out because of that as well. I also started growing mold around the edges. The wood is soft enough to be brushed lightly, but will also take some wood off. TL; DR Don't buy this board unless you're religiously willing to wipe down both sides after every cleaning and I don't know, build a system to hang it from the ceiling to dry.

Pros
  • Easy to clean: Wet the cutting board before each use to avoid stains; Wash with mild detergent and towel dry then let air dry
