I've recently learned that most surge protectors will continue to work even after their protective capacity has been exhausted. You may have a "guarded" light that has stopped lighting up, but you need to know what to look for. Also, I've learned that unlike smoke detectors, most major companies recommend replacing devices every X years. After circling my house, I found several surge protectors with a protected light that no longer burns. To that end, I've decided to replace every surge protector in my house. After a few hours of studying network filters, Tripp Lite devices seem like the best choice, at least at first glance. Most by far not all devices have a 150V terminal. TLP128TTUSBB has 4000+ joules for less than $30! To be too good to be true? Maybe. I bought several ISOBARs to protect high performance servers and a sea reef aquarium. The rest of the equipment I bought is from their home line. I installed 3 Tripp Lite 12 Outlet Surge Protector extensions. One of them was on the table my kids use. This table contains all of their various USB devices. I have several AC devices and a few USB battery packs connected to the TLP128TTUSBB's USB ports. An hour later I smelled a strong smell of burning. Upon closer inspection, the surge protector around the USB charging ports was too hot to touch. USB cable and device felt good. It never quite caught fire, but I'm sure it would have if I hadn't intervened. I have a feeling the problem is with the USB ports. Regardless, I don't want to release another one that has my kids plugging in almost every USB device they can find. I'm not sure what to do next. I just bought a whole bunch of Tripp Lite units and returned a whole bunch of CyberPower units. What a mess!
