Review on ๐ŸŒŠ Precision Navigation Tool: Davis Marine Sextant - Enhance Your Nautical Adventure by Shigg Bigbee

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Good accuracy but cheaply made - can easily be improved

was interested in celestial navigation and studied via youtube and the internet - used a Mark 3 sextant for practice. there is no better alternative at a reasonable practical price with good accuracy. I've practiced with an artificial Davis horizon (but you can make your own as it's just a reflective liquid (like water) sheltered from the wind). I used the calculated altitude via the app (the estimated position is my GPS position) and can get an average accuracy of 2 minutes (equivalent to about 2 nautical miles). That's good enough to get the concept currently and use it on your boat for fun (okay, and as a backup if you want). But now to the tool: 1. The two index tones, together with the two horizontal tones, ensure that the darkening is too low. The image of the sun is still too bright on a sunny day and remains on the retina for some time even after you close your eyes - looking at the sun is uncomfortable despite all the shades. So I used extra sunglass film to darken it. I just hope that the UV400 dimming will be enough on regular parasols, but haven't found any information on this. A comfortable darkness in the sun does not mean that UV rays can no longer damage your retina. As previously mentioned, I confirm that the horizon mirror only shows the sextant in its right 30%, while the left 70% shows the straightening mirror (and therefore your view). It is undoubtedly enough for aiming, but with this orientation 30% of the size of the mirror is useless. If you tilt the horizon mirror back a little, you can see that more sections of the index mirror are visible in the picture, but since it is fixed, it cannot be adjusted and it folds back. (Only the straightening mirror is adjustable vertically and horizontally)3. Marker ink is easy to remove. In just a few views, he began to blur and disappear in the endings. Davis, please work on it and use better ink! Problem: The vernier reading relies on an accurate scale (but if you have one, it works great!). After erasing it from the ends, finding matching lines is very difficult, the vernier principle. I had to redraw them with a permanent marker, but after that it won't be as accurate. It is therefore quite possible that the markings now jump from: still left, still left, suitable, next left again?, now right, further right. Questions really need to be worked out. If these issues were addressed it would be 5 out of 5.

Pros
  • handy thing
Cons
  • the packaging is ugly
