good insulator for torch work

I am new to working with metal. What I don't want to do is set my table on fire! I've started soldering a bit with my crème brûlée burner, read a suggestion online or in a book to use a ceramic fireclay brick under a magnesia brick as extra heat protection for your worktop, so I got this one. (I put everything on an old foil-lined baking sheet.) I don't work with very large pieces, mostly bracelet-sized, and some practice square designs come from a soldering book I bought. So far I've only used copper. But that's enough for what I do. To be honest the heat isn't getting through the chalk block so it's still in good shape and I'll probably start right on it when my chalk block falls apart. There is nothing more to say about the ceramic block. brick! It has a rough surface to keep your work in place when working directly on this block. And it's a great insulator. Being new I still choose my preferred setting but I'm glad I bought it and would happily do it again if I had to repeat it.

Pros
  • Material: ceramic
Cons
  • Available in white only

It’s size it’s great for soldering larger pieces.
