RESULTS: This Braun HM5100 blends like no other and is easy to use, clean and store. my wife is happy Happy wife = happy life! :-THINK: I bought this Braun HM5100 to replace my wife's old hand blender (which originally belonged to her mother and must have been at least 40 years old) when it finally breathed its last earlier this year. After doing A LOT of research online looking for the best overall value (engine performance/features/user rating) I kept coming back to this unit from Braun. They usually have a solid reputation due to their range of different devices. (Braun offers half a dozen attachments powered by this blender's motor, but we didn't need them, so I just bought the blender myself.) Heavy as a brick. This worried my wife greatly; We also have one of those Godzilla sized KitchenAid stand mixers. It works amazing and we bring it with us for our annual Christmas cookie baking and such, but otherwise we rarely use it because it weighs a ton and takes up too much of our precious, limited countertop space. The balance for this HM5100 is slightly forward from the front of the handle where your index finger sits, allowing the working end to naturally tilt straight into the bowl. The top and bottom of the blender handle have rubber-plastic knobs for a better grip when blending, which is very convenient (especially when your hands are slippery from cooking spray, vegetable oil, egg white, etc.). The power cord is longer than your old blender (over 5 feet!) The cord also has a neat swivel; it floats freely or can be "snapped" into a vertical or horizontal position. Clever. The lightweight wire beaters with plastic inserts got me thinking at first, but they work great compared to the wider blade-style beaters on your old blender. Fits snugly, doesn't wobble when mixed and is easy to clean. They are designed to fit into the blender only one way: the spigot end of a whisk is hexagonal, the other is round. They have matching hex/round holes molded into the mixer body which makes the correct installation of the beater quite reliable. (Of course, whether the plastic parts on these whisks will last for years remains to be seen.) The large on/off button on top of the blender has a raised ridge to make it easier to turn on and off with your thumb. and it has an interesting safety feature: it won't stay in the "ON" position until the beaters are fully locked into the mixer. The speed control is a large rotary switch that can be easily adjusted with the thumb of the hand holding the blender or with your "free" hand. Elegant and simple. The blender is surprisingly quiet considering the powerful motor; does not depend a bit on any of the speed settings, whether mixing biscuits, cake mixes or even bread dough. (By the way, the kneading paddles appear to be well designed and made and are just as easy to insert/remove and clean). The body of the blender is easy to clean with a warm, damp cloth. The package includes a black cloth drawstring bag for storing beaters and dough hooks. Overall we really like this blender and I'm glad I bought it as I use it almost as much as my wife. In fact, my only real complaint is purely cosmetic: the blender is only available in black. (Woman would have preferred white or red.) But that's a VERY minor nag. So far my wife and I have been very happy with this Braun HM5100 and would recommend it to anyone looking to buy their blender first hand or as a replacement or upgrade.
