Review on Bont Skates: Precision ABEC 5 Skate Bearings - Pre-Lubricated for Inline Speed, Roller Skate, Derby Skateboard, Scooter (Set of 16) by David Edwards

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Good performance, but the buyer beware.

I bought these bearings to replace the stock bearings on a pair of kids skates as the stock bearings rarely turn on their own. Although performance is about the same as the ABEC 5 bearing set, I was disappointed that one of the Revain product images was misleading. As you can see from the pictures (and even the first picture of the Revain product). These are HERMETIC bearings which means the bearing shield is NOT removable which means that when they are dirty and out of service they cannot be easily opened up and cleaned. I went with them to a set of rollerbones, 1). for the name Bont and 2). because I thought they were viable, which would put them on par with Rollerbones. Unfortunately it isn't. In terms of ease of use and installation, they came pre-lubricated and aside from the poor quality of the skates themselves, they were extremely easy to install. did some (non-scientific) "scientific" performance tests: I installed four sets of bearings on the same wheel, mounted it on the same axle, and then timed it three times to measure equal force rotation times. can at any turn. Below are the results, but please note that the results below use original bearings from a NEW pair of skates of the same model, not those shown in the video, as the video was only intended to show the drastic difference between older (cheaper) skates. Standard Bearing and Bont ABEC 5. Round 1: Original Bearing, Test 1 - 1.59s, Test 2 - 1.46s, Test 3 - 1.32s. Round 4: Bones RedsTest1 - 47.36sTest2 - 47.77sTest3 - 49 ,43s So going from standard bearings to ABEC 5 bearings resulted in a pretty significant jump in performance without being over the top since Bones would have been overkill for a $40+ baby pair. Roller skates. Overall I can't complain about the performance but only time will tell what the durability will be especially as these skates are primarily used outdoors. Unfortunately, the fact that I cannot service/clean these bearings only diminishes their value and I would recommend going with a brand that allows you to remove the protective shield to extend the life of the bearings.
