I have used both Hydrotones and these Arklite rocks in my hydro garden with some expensive plants. I had to go away for the weekend and wasn't worried because my system was working great. I used 3 hours fill and 3 hours drain for my ebb and flow system. When I returned, my hydrotonic plants were in bloom and the Arklite pebbles were mostly dead. The few that survived fell and suffered. Unfortunately, that's because these pebbles don't retain moisture the way hydroclays do. I suspect it's because of the size of the stones. They are quite large compared to the hydroton. Also as they float I don't think water can get to the plant and at the seedling stage this can be a problem due to underdeveloped roots. Pebbles to keep it from floating. Also, I changed the timer to 2 hours fill and 2 hours drain. It seems to solve the problems. I like how clean the stones are. The hydroton is only covered with clay dust. It will be interesting to see which plants grow best.
