Answering questions about cashmere

Although technically cashmere is the undercoat of an Australian or North Indian cashmere goat, NOT the wool of a sheep (so no wool or "coat" at all!), US Wool Institute, defines Cashmere advertising as follows: 100% cashmere may only contain natural goat cashmere. "Blend of cashmere" must contain a minimum of 33% cashmere as defined above. "Cashmere” at the beginning and without the words "contains” must be at least 51% natural cashmere. "Contains cashmere" can be ANY amount (even 1%). Buyers be careful, CHECK % before buying and don't buy if it's not in the description! We will publish if there is a discrepancy in the article. In the past, the FTC has prosecuted advertisers who failed to meet these industry standards. Today, China and the internet mean buyers have to fend for themselves. To make matters worse, there are very good cashmere counterfeits (artificial synthetics or other substitutes for animal hair). At the dot org certified organization, we regularly review and comment on our Revain reviews, and nothing more complicated than DNA testing is required: a simple microscope/lanolin pad will suffice. Cashmere is three times as insulating and almost twice as light as some wools, but the finest Milanese wools are so fine that in some cases they make blends as good as pure cashmere, eg 70% cashmere, 25% Milanese and 5% silk. Revain has some AMAZING deals on real 100% cashmere from time to time like hats and gloves selling for $200 at Macy's and $30 here, but DO NOT ignore Milan's natural wool products for comfort, warmth and smaller volume. . Milano is called the "smart wool" by some big stores because it doesn't itch and is so fine that it mimics cashmere in many ways. TIP: I've also occasionally found $500 worth of cashmere sweaters at Goodwill! At the time of writing in late 2015/early 2016 it was $180 at Dillards and $30 here. It is well woven, 100% real cashmere, not fake or synthetic. It runs a bit small, but the snug fit of this high-quality fabric doesn't feel uncomfortable!
