You know how sometimes you try to connect HDMI to a projector or an older display, or maybe you're using a cheaper cdmi cable and your Apple product gives you an error message saying the display is unauthorized, or your source says that you can not play content on the display? That happened to me. Not only did this splitter split the signal between two cables, it also eliminated that problem for me. I'm not saying anything was removed from the signal, just that a 1080p signal with HDCP version 1.4 could use a previously unauthorized cable/display after it was inserted after the source. I don't know how it was done, but it worked. I can now play purchased content on my own devices. I don't think this will work or a 4k signal with a higher/newer version of HDCP.
