Won't work if your key has a transponder (chip)

I have a 97 c230 that had a broken key cylinder so I bought this replacement. Went in easily, no problem. I tried to start the car but it keeps stalling. Then I put the original key next to the spare key, turned both and it started. So if your original key has a chip it will not work unless you stick the original key on the spare key.
