I use this thermometer to check the water temperature in the lakes and streams that feed Salt Lake City. It works well and once calibrated it seems to maintain its calibration. It's accurate enough for my purposes and looks pretty solid (I've managed not to drop it yet, so I'm not sure!). The rating of 4 instead of 5 stars is due to my preference for a digital thermometer (Taylor 9842) that I bought at the same time. The price was almost the same, but the digital registered faster, was much easier to read (which is useful in inclement weather), very accurate (while this one is somewhat accurate at best), and waterproof (this one can get water in your face if it's submerged, although it doesn't seem to affect that). Of course the Digital sometimes needs a battery so you have to be careful to carry a spare and be prepared to swap it out in the field, but I don't see that as a major disadvantage. I don't think you can go wrong with this thermometer, but depending on your application, a digital thermometer may be preferable.
