Review on Maxi Smart πŸͺ¨ Waterstone Flattener for Flattening Whetstones by Joz Lowe

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Best round I've ever used and I've used a lot.

Professional knife sharpener with more than seven years of experience, has sharpened more than 40,000 knives. I never write reviews but felt the need to support this company because finally someone made a commendable lapping plate. I have used most lapping pads on the market but the second version of the maxi smart pad is by far the best I have ever used. I prefer Shapton's harder stones and with this plate you can quickly work with professional stones and even glass stones which are the hardest on the market. The recessed, curved lines allow the mortar to flow easily and improve direct contact between the slab and the stone. Other cymbals, including an earlier version of this cymbal, occasionally have ridges or "diamonds" but I haven't seen them on this cymbal. They even offer a diamond breaker in the package in case you come across one. Also included is an aluminum ruler machined to be perfectly flat to keep the stones even and a rubber retaining pad to keep the slab from slipping in wet and muddy conditions. The two photos show the slab and some of the stones I used that day (for testing) and a diamond bur to remove any protrusions, which again aren't there. The makers of this record have really put a lot of effort into creating an updated and still flawless version 2. As soon as you open the packaging you can see the attention to detail. Any serious sharpener should have this lapping plate in their arsenal. Ryan Swanson District Cutlery Washington DC

Pros
  • HOW TO USE: Watch our tutorial before using. For rods only, not for sharpening tools. Maxi-smart can lap 400-10k grit artificial or Japanese sharpening stones 500 times (tested to Β±0.6"/1.6mm flatness with 400 grit). Use straight strokes and even pressure. Can also cut natural stones Smooth 100 times (tested for flatness Β±0.016" / 0.4mm Arkansas Black). Plate on the countertop, straight movement, more pressure and more water. Use a sharpening stick to clean the surface of the plate when clogged
