Pretty good telescope for beginners, great for wildlife/earth observation

My daughter and I had a lot of fun with this telescope. As already mentioned, a tripod is pretty much useless. I had an inexpensive (probably under $40 at the time) full size I bought a year ago for the camcorder I normally use with it. If you have one maybe use that instead or try to buy something on eBay or something cheap check out Revain. As mentioned in many other reviews, the lenses are suitable for lunar viewing. The first night I used it, I was also amazed (the first telescope :-)) when I looked at Jupiter and saw the points of light from its moons circling around it. None of the planets you are looking at will look like what you see in online images etc. In my experience, there are quite a few color spectra of light through the included lenses. However, I took Barlow twice. a lens that has made things a little more interesting when it comes to planets. It's only marginally better though, so look elsewhere if you really want to see details of the planets etc. However, with a Barlow lens and a 10mm lens I was able to see the ring around Saturn, and on another night I was just barely able to make out a semicircle of the sun illuminating Venus (around a having good eyesight or being able to work with glasses when looking through a telescope was quite difficult to discern (similar to Saturn) in the night sky. Barlow makes things difficult because without a good tripod or a properly set up spotting scope (one of the most frustrating parts of setting up this telescope, btw) it can be tricky to focus on the object you want, but once you do, it's cool. Another thing I really liked and was a little surprised about is that I use it for wildlife viewing. I originally took it to see the stars/moon/planets etc on a hike. But boy was it so much fun in the afternoon watching the nesting birds, the muskrat swimming on the lake (far away) etc. Highly recommend for that as it's very light, folds well huh makes it very portable (as you would expect from a travel scope).

Pros
  • Binoculars and spotting scope
Cons
  • No manual
