Review on Sony BDPS1700 Streaming Blu-Ray Disc Player (2016 Model) - WIRED Connectivity for Ultimate Viewing Experience by Omar Alradwan

Is that Sony?!

I bought these for my parents to replace an old DVD player and use them for Blu-ray. I have an older Sony BDP-S470 from 2010 that I compared this new model to. First, first impressions. I have to say when I took it out of the box I was less than impressed. First of all, it uses the power adapter (which is included) instead of a power cord. If you are installing this in a modern home theater you will already be running out of space on your surge protector. Who uses power supplies now?! Also, the player is tiny, not much bigger than a hardback book, and not only does it look cheap, it feels cheap too. As always, there's no display here, just a tiny indicator in the top-right corner letting you know the device is on. Older Sony models had a timekeeping display. Well I know you can press the indicator on the remote control to bring it up on the screen. It's also nice to have a physical display. There should be some notable improvements to media loading and playing. It's excruciatingly slow, taking a good 30-40 seconds to get to the initial splash screen and movies taking a while to load. It's noticeably slower than my old Sony player. The remote control that comes with the device is also smaller (also surprisingly cheap feeling). But it's well labeled and seems easy enough to understand. I doubt I would recommend this player to anyone, it just doesn't look like a quality product. It looks like I could go to a big store during the holidays and buy at least half the price. I chose Sony because I expected a better player. Time will tell but I'm glad I bought the extended warranty. I haven't tested any of the streaming apps, this is mainly used for media playback (DVD and Blu-ray). Cons: - Power brick instead of power cord - Tiny size - No display on device - Slow, very slow - Looks cheap, looks cheap Pros: - It plays movies - Fits almost anywhere (I know I put the size as a minus , but also a professional fits everywhere)

Pros
  • TV and Video
Cons
  • Questionable purchase for the elderly
