I was somewhat attached to my old very expensive knives - mostly because they were so expensive when I got them 15 years ago. But I didn't treat them very well and after all these years, it was time for new knives. These Ninja knives are SHARP right out of the box. The blade of one of the steak knives accidentally touched my finger when I was using it, and that caused stinging pain and some bleeding. These knives are so sharp that you can't even gently tap them to see how sharp they are. The built in sharpener is wonderful. For some reason I thought it was electric. Maybe because I associate Ninja with kitchen electrics. (love my Ninja choppers and air fryer). But it's not electric. You put the knife in the slot - either the top or the bottom depending on which knife you want to sharpen - and then move a lever up and down 10 times (or really, however many times you want). The instructions advise that you NOT sharpen the knives with every use, and that you rinse the knives after sharpening to remove any metallic dust. I found it very easy to use the built in sharpener and even after dozens of uses, my knives have retained their sharpness as if they were brand new. I am optimistic that these knives will last me the next 15 years. I remain happy with every Ninja product I've ever owned. I recommend these knives and genuinely find that the built-in-sharpener is useful and not at all a gimmick. It's much better than a manual or electric device shoved in some drawer, and certainly better than a sharpening steel.
