Almost direct replacement
This starter fits a Mercury 40hp 2-stroke out of the box. (and I'm sure many others). The only problem is the black cap on the shaft hits the flywheel cover. So you will either have to drill a hole in the flywheel cover, cut off the black cover, or not reattach the flywheel cover. I chose not to reattach the flywheel cover and it works fine. It would be 5 stars if I could reinstall the flywheel cover without modification. Still not a bad value.
