I don't know what "metal" this antenna is made of, but a few seconds after I took it out of the box and attached it to the back of my scanner, the outer laminated material began to peel off. This revealed what was underneath the light gray plastic material. I have had many of these telescoping antennas over the years, I have never seen any of these designs before. The antenna will not stand upright when fully extended, it will fall under its own weight. Also, the reception isn't very good, it pulls fewer channels, less clearly than the standard Uniden antenna, which is 18 inches shorter. I would recommend this product because of the cheap materials,
