Ink is ink, like any other ink. But the HP boy doesn't want you to buy it yourself. HP wants you to subscribe to the Instant Ink plagiarism. They want it badly. When I first replaced the cartridge (after actually printing too little), a lot of pop-ups suddenly appeared on my computer screen, and the printer's LCD itself had a bunch of crazy messages. In short, HP wants you to sign up for Instant Ink, and they won't be silent about that. Is always. I'm trying to get a job done and HP spits all this useless crap out at me to read if a little thing is really important. I will never buy an HP product again, not because the product is bad, but because HP itself prevents me from actually working. The printer is only a few weeks old and I'm considering throwing it away because of the hassle factor.
