You must open the software and "connect " to use the device.

That's what I was hoping for Once once this is set up, you can simply plug it in and an internet connection will be provided. It's not like this. You plug in the flash drive, open the software, click connect, ignore the warning about using third-party data, and it works. I set it up with a GoogleFi data card. You need to set up APN h2g2.
