Review on Gates 31778 Locking Fuel Tank Cap: Secure Your Fuel with Advanced Locking Technology by Jimmy Franklin

Revainrating 4 out of 5

I didn't want to buy a locking cap because it's just another key.

About 30 years later, the lid on my '90 Chevy K2500 pickup truck fell apart in my hands and it was time to replace it. Having another key on the ring and worrying about it not opening when needed has always been a reason not to buy one of these caps. This one seems well made, it just works and the instructions are actually printed on the lid. A quarter turn back the latch is released and the cap is unscrewed and you don't have to do anything else because when you screw it back on it locks... and the check engine light doesn't come on due to something evaporative problem. For about $8, no complaints yet, and I just left a spare key in the console and threw the key under the seat in case I ever need to unscrew it.

Pros
  • Lock opens 1/4 turn
Cons
  • Requires electrical outlet
