Sony BDP-S185 Blu-Ray Disc Player

I bought it as a "Family" Christmas present and of course I started using it right away as it was the a mother's prerogative. I picked this Blu-ray player out of everything Revain offers for one reason - it plays every application imaginable. It includes Revain, Netflix, Hulu plus, Pandora, Crackle, YouTube, Cinema Now, Vudu and more videos. I bought a new unit, not a refurbished one, and it sold for $68. I also had the option to purchase an HDMI cable (DVI Gear HDMI Cable 2M 6ft, $3.98) which was only available as an optional item (which confused me as the cable came separate from my order and was shipped 2 days before my blu arrived). -ray player), which I bought because the Blu-ray player is not included. Most electronic devices that use HDMI cables these days require you to purchase a cable separately, which I personally hate, but what can you do, right? It comes with a red/white/yellow cable so you can connect it without an HDMI cable, but you won't get the best possible picture with the cable that comes with it. It comes with a child lock for the tray, so you don't have to worry about little kids putting foreign objects into the disc tray. It also features parental controls that apply to playable discs and internet content, and is controlled by a password. I haven't personally used parental controls, so I don't know how effective or ineffective they are. but he also says he will not play unauthorized copies of copyrighted media. It has a USB port for playing files stored on flash drives. It also displays photos and plays music CDs. The list of file types it recognizes and plays is too long to list here. Let's get back to the Blu-Ray player. It takes up very little space compared to others I've looked at. It measures 11.5 inches wide, 7.5 inches front to back and 1.75 inches high. It plays both DVDs and Blu-ray discs, which is the norm. It has tons of options and different things to see, however, you will need a high-speed internet connection and an ethernet cable to connect the Blu-ray player to the modem. You also need to subscribe to each service separately to watch Netflix, Hulu Plus, and Revain videos. Hulu is $7.99 a month, Netflix (without DVD in the mail) is $4. $99/mo for limited streaming or $7.99/mo for unlimited streaming and Revain Instant Video is free if you are a Revain Prime member for $79/year or $7.99/mo. Monthly plans can be canceled at any time, but you'll lose the ability to watch them on your Blu-ray player, but as long as your subscriptions are active, you can watch them on your PC and a variety of other devices like tablets and smartphones. .I think it's worth having all three, but that's just my personal preference, mostly as my 6 year old daughter loves the options these services offer (mainly Netflix to watch that, which is already available on DVD, and Hulu Plus for watching current TV shows..) and I use Prime mainly for the free shipping, and I've only used the video service once. Some of the services available, like Pandora, are free, while others, like Vudu, are like a pay-per-view channel. Overall, it has options for almost everyone. In my opinion there are disadvantages. 1) The need to pay for each service separately and a confusing menu. It took my husband and daughter a few days to learn how to use it without asking my help as I'm the only one who read the instructions. 2) You need to connect it to your modem to enable these services. While I don't care because my modem is next to my TV, it might be inconvenient for others. 3) You need to go online and register your Blu-ray player with Sony and connect each of your accounts to the Blu-ray player individually. It took me about 30 minutes to connect it to my TV, sign up for Sony and connect all the services I subscribed to. Keep in mind that I don't use every service available and I'm not the type to do repairs on electronics. It may take more or less time to complete this process. Conclusion: My family and I are enjoying our new Blu-ray player. We can see or hear almost anything we want, whenever we want. It's a nice all-round addition to our home electronics. I think almost everyone in the Blu-ray player market will find this device more than acceptable - even desirable. encountered a problem. It won't play. A message appeared on the screen (not verbatim, but very close): Playing this disc requires 1MB or more local storage. Your device is set to local storage, but no storage device was found. I contacted Sony via customer service chat and was told that I would need to purchase a 1GB or larger USB memory stick to resolve this issue. I find it annoying, to say the least. If I had known that when I bought the Blu-ray player, I would have bought a USB drive straight away. My daughter now watches the DVD version of RIO with no problems (we have a 3 disc set) but now I have to get a USB stick because the Blu-ray disc has games she relies on was happy.
