Review on 🐠 Acurel Activated Carbon Granules - Premium Filter for Aquariums and Ponds by Jen Linares

Revainrating 4 out of 5

My first reaction to this charcoal was that it was dirty - I had to wash it beforehand.

This is my first carbon purchase for our tank so will update as we try other brands as this container behemoth wears out. We usually buy pre-made filters that you just plug in, but we've had the option of using filters that you assemble (Tetra 26164 Whisper Bio-Bag Cartridge, Unassembled, Large, 12-pack) and as I mentioned in In this Review, you really need to buy more carbon and ammonia neutralizing crystals (Marineland PA0382 White Diamond Ammonia Neutralizing Crystals, 50 oz, 1417-G) to make these filters shine. My first reaction to this charcoal - it was dirty - required quite a bit of washing before it was ready to go into the tank. Again, I'd say I'm an amateur here, but compared to the other filters we've used, I felt like I was going to wash forever. I bought based on other reviewers who mentioned how pure this product is and I have to at least disagree with the container we received. Once the filter is filled and cleaned it seems to filter the water and remove impurities really well. Others have written that it "runs up" quickly, but we change our filter about every 3 weeks and I would say it does a great job of filtering during that time. Maybe others ask more about the filter and see a quick decline, but in our case it seems to filter like it should. Final word: I would buy it again, it seems to work as advertised although I think it was a bit "dirty" at first. While great value for money, I'll probably try a different brand next time I shop so I have something to compare.
