A customer made a video on how to open and close it, please watch it. The video helped me before I bought this item. I'm happy with my purchase even though one of my poles broke in the back. Was broken when I received this item. I didn't put much stock in it because it was only one. Make sure you have a long knife as it's easy to go past the lines if your knife isn't sharp (the leads are so dull). All in all this is a good product. My family members are very happy. My husband enjoys his freshly sliced bread.
