It relies on the pressure applied to the plastic clips to hold the shelves at the correct height on the supports. The clips are tapered and should be oriented with the narrow end facing up. They have ribs on the inside of each clip which are important because they fit into the notches on the bars to hold the shelf at that height. But on the device they sent me, 2 of the clamps had their ribs formed in a lower position than the other 22 (and I checked they were padded). I didn't want a shelf to be attached incorrectly so I sent it back. Got a refund instead of risking the same issue with a replacement. The entire shelf is ruined by two cheap plastic clips. It was slightly cheaper than Amazon's basic version, but may have better quality control.
