These treads have excellent grip. I've had them for about a month now and not only do they offer great grip but they are clearly very durable. I installed them on wooden basement steps so I can't vouch for how they perform on the outside steps but I suspect they will work fine outside. I installed them after slipping and falling down all the stairs (oops!). Now the steps are much safer and now I have full confidence even if water gets on the steps. They were very easy to assemble and have held up great. But what's really nice about them is that you can still pull them out and move them around for a while. I had to do this with a couple of them when I didn't quite line them up on the first try. Once they were in place, I ran them over with a squeegee roller I have at the store. I recommend using some sort of roller for best results, but it's not necessary. Also, make sure your steps are clean before installing steps. It may be a good idea to rinse them with TSP to ensure they are perfectly clean. I took the opportunity to redraw the steps before installing them. This was not necessary, but they still had to be repainted. As a side note, I had to scoff at a review or two warning you about those traction marks if you have a dog. I don't know what kind of dog could be harmed or even disliked by these caterpillars. Think about it, dogs can easily walk over rocks, concrete, sticks and just about anything imaginable, so how these caterpillars could bother a dog is beyond me. In fact, they probably like caterpillars. Dogs don't like slippery surfaces. I have two cats and their litter box is in my basement and they don't even seem to notice the steps. A good thing! Buy with confidence.
