This is our first test version of Microbits. Sitting down with my 7 year old boy I thought it would be quite difficult to set up the device to program it from a computer. However, it turns out it's that simple! Just create a program (actually just a set of kid-friendly graphical blocks of code) using a web-based code generation tool, then upload the file and copy (or drag and drop) the file into the micro-bit folder if that USB cable is connected. .If you change the program, you don't even need to delete the old one, it will delete it for you as soon as it is loaded into the Microbit's memory. Thus, the file management process is minimal and fast. We connected a portable speaker and composed some tunes to sync with the LED grid patterns. Our little kid was so excited to show everyone! The only downside to this set is that it is not complete. For example, the motherboard uses 3V for power, but comes with a 9V battery and connector. We had to use a 3V holder (two AA batteries) from another electronics kit and some alligator clips, also not included in this kit. I wonder what else might be missing as tomorrow we will continue to work on more complex projects. But overall it's incredibly fun and very educational!
