My son is 4 years old and is very into jigsaw puzzles (an evolution of jigsaw puzzles with a picture below or a cutout). We probably have 8 jigsaw puzzles featuring Melissa and Doug, and while we like some of them more than others, they're all very well done and fun. This set of 4 is no exception! The good thing about it: - Quality. That's what I've counted on Melissa and Doug to do, and they won't be disappointed. I would say it's a small step up in quality compared to some others but for the price you pay what you get is really great! The wooden box is well made, the pieces aren't flimsy and the pictures don't peel off at the corners like most jigsaw puzzles do - FOUR PUZZLES IN ONE SMALL BOX! My boy is obsessed with vehicles (particularly trains) so this was perfect. This set includes a train, fire truck, school bus and race car. Heaven for a little boy. - Simple enough and with so much detail that my 4 year old (who is also autistic, gets frustrated easily and gives up when things get too difficult) could do it with a little help. - Probably my favorite part in this book. This puzzle is what worried me when I saw it. I imagined my boy throwing away ALL the pieces at once and I had a horrible time trying to figure out which piece went with which picture and in which compartment. Luckily, the smart folks at Melissa and Doug kept that in mind and put different red shapes on the back of each individual puzzle piece so you can easily figure out which ones go together, which ones have a circle, which have a square, etc. It really does Fun to tidy up because it involves sorting! Good job M&D!- The lid doubles as a removable puzzle frame, giving plenty of room to work. While these puzzles are easy to put together without a base (if you're doing it on a hard surface like a table or hardwood floor), it's nice to have this feature. - Portability! Our son has very few activities that don't involve noise. The few toys we have that can keep him busy for a while are very valuable, and even fewer are portable. This is a very small box that easily fits in a backpack or diaper bag if the diaper bag isn't too full. I have one word: church. We take it to church and let the boy go to town with these pew puzzles at our feet. People may judge but the fact that we even meet a 4 year old autistic kid every week is a miracle and requires serious dedication haha! Overall I think these are cute little puzzles perfect for a 4 year old. (or 2 or 3 years depending on how geeky they are)! Check out my photos to see how they all look together, as well as next to another Melissa and Doug puzzle that is larger and sold separately. I did NOT receive this item for free or at a discount.
