Review on πŸš€ Motorola MB8611 DOCSIS 3.1 Multi-Gig Cable Modem: Ideal for Xfinity Gigabit, Cox Gigablast, Spectrum & More! by Duane Kaul

Revainrating 5 out of 5

If you are satisfied with Docsis 3.0. then this cable modem is fantastic and fast!

This cable modem is a beast (in a good way)! A little over 7 years ago I bought a Motorola SB6120 to replace a crappy cable modem that Comcast was charging me monthly. I had no problems with the SB6120 but received an email from Xfinity saying I needed to upgrade my hardware. I suspect they have increased my service speed and the SB6120 is so old that updates from Motorola may not support it. Good. I paid $75 for the SB6120 and it probably saved me over $750 in monthly rent for 7+ years. First decide whether you want DOCSIS 3.0 or 3.1 as Docsis 3.1 is new and will likely be used for many years. To date, Motorola has only 1 Docsis 3.1 cable modem, which is called the MB8600 and is almost twice the price of the Docsis 3.0 MB7621. If you compare the specs the MB8600 is faster but at 1000Mbps and Comcast certified 400Mbps the MB7621 is much faster than my 150Mbps service. I received it today, activated it and connected it to my new Motorola MR1700 router. The process was quick and easy if you can understand what they are trying to say in the quick start guide. I activated my laptop connected directly to the cable modem and the speed exceeded my 150Mbps by almost 30%. After connecting my laptop directly through the router, my speed also surpassed my service speed at the same level. The only way I can lose on this purchase is if Docsis 3.0 is out of date in less than 8 months and I bet that's unlikely.

Pros
  • Regular price
Cons
  • No performance
