I have used Cradle canvases and Arches oil paper but with repeated use of the lower layers of what I had painted a day or two earlier with various scratches. Tools, once these layers have started to "set up", nothing I've tried compares to working on a wooden surface. Also, these cradle plates are very attractive and well made and will make my artwork even more impressive. I particularly like the considerable depth on the sides. Finally, the price per plate is excellent when bought in sets of 5. Just remember to apply plaster (several coats) and mask off the sides with masking tape before use so you can protect the unpainted wood from paint until you decide whether to hang it unpainted or paint the sides when you're done .
