Review on 🔴 Wire Bead Panaracer Comet Tire by John Brouillard

Good all-round tire at a good price

I ordered 2 of these tires for my mountain bike. It had Panaracer Dart (front) and Smoke (rear) tires which I replaced. But this tire configuration with specific front and rear tires was really aggressive and only suitable for trail riding. Unfortunately my typical ride these days is about 3 miles on pavement to get to the trail and then about 3 miles on a rocky trail. and tree roots or hard gravel and ash, depending on which direction I go in the trail system. So twice as long for a round trip and that's 6 miles of pavement and 6 miles of rocky trails or a hard pack. Every 12 miles has about 1000 feet of elevation gain. So the aggressive off-road dart/smoke tires weren't great on tarmac. They were rough, noisy and braking was light. But on the track they were great. I decided to look for the best universal solution and found these comets. They're slightly thicker than the tires they replaced, at 2.25 inches versus 2.10 inches. But they fit perfectly with the wheels and frame of the bike. I'm happy with the compromise these tires make. They are much softer, quieter and brake better on asphalt. But traction still feels adequate on trails and hardpack, even when wet. The only real drop in performance on trails is when climbing, where I notice a little more rear tire slippage on steep climbs when dismounting for maximum power. But for me it's not a big difference in the terrain I'm overcoming. On the mountain I like to change the grip to be able to brake better on the pavement. Avid trail enthusiasts who never need to ride tarmac might be happy with a more aggressive tire setup. Finally, you can buy 2 of these tires for the price of some special front and rear off-road tires. For those of us who ride mixed terrain, these Comet tires seem like a smart choice.
