Big differences between this and the Honda thermostat

I bought this thermostat to replace the original in my '08 Civic EX as a preventive measure. The product is ideal but unfortunately does not work in cold climates. I had no problems until it dropped below freezing this winter. The car started throwing out check engine lights because it didn't warm up in time. On this particular car, the thermostat housing is attached to the lower radiator hose. So the coolant is pushed from the top hose down the radiator to the bottom hose and the coolant stops at the radiator side of the thermostat. I believe what happens is that the coolant pushes against the thermostat side of the radiator and due to the use of small return springs it opens before the car has reached temperature. Remember that they open inwards towards the engine. After two secondary thermostats, I bought one from a Honda dealer ($41 btw) and had no more problems. The Honda block has a much larger return spring as well as a rubber seal inside. So when the Honda thermostat is closed it is sealed. Both aftermarket thermostats use a metal gasket when closed. I tested both aftermarket devices in boiling water on my stovetop and both opened and closed at the correct temperature. I don't know exactly what makes and models they fit, but be careful with this particular application.

Pros
  • Engine cooling and climate control
Cons
  • Cable is shorter than other options
