Although this piece is very heavy in most cases, the wire is not that heavy. At some point it just breaks and then the whole thing is unusable. I've considered buying stainless steel wire, but changing the wire is quite frustrating and a bit difficult. The wire is a lot thicker than other planes I've used. Possibly almost twice as thick or even thicker, making the cheese difficult to cut, which in turn defeated the purpose of a dedicated cut for cheese. One day I'll probably break down and try thinner wire and I'll write back if/when I do. When I was still using it, before it broke again, the wire always seemed to sag, meaning all my cuts were uneven, and the screws started breaking out after the 20th time adjusting the wire. Although the wire is very close to the edge of this slicer, there is an uncut piece of cheese at the end of the cut. If you cut in the air this problem goes away, but the cutting becomes much more difficult and care still needs to be taken to get a good clean cut. This slicer has potential, but thick wire and tricky wire tensioners are problematic. Hope. Someone will find this review helpful!
