Review on IOGEAR GFR381 SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Multi-Card Reader/Writer: High-Performance Data Transfer for Various Media Cards by Devin Jirsa

DOA - Overpriced especially since it didn't work

I went to B&M because I needed a reader to quickly download some photos and my old reader died due to it of a twisted, broken cable. It was the only reader they had in this supposed electronics supermarket and the price was too high. I got it anyway, brought it home and opened it. It wasn't until I opened the box and looked at the booklet inside that I saw that it would only work with USB 2.0 or 1.1 for MAC. I finally found it on the outside of the package, but it's very low and behind one of the package's sealed seams, so you still can't see it without opening the package! So there is no such thing as USB 3.0 speed for your MAC. Connected to a USB 2.0 hub - nothing. Tried in three different hub slots - still nothing. Tried in two direct USB 2.0 ports on the front and back of the MAC Pro - nothing helps. Tried in the USB 3.0 hubs and direct slots on the back of the unit, still nada. $31 for a very flimsy piece of flimsy metal that for some reason doesn't work. My experience with IOGear in the past has always been that the connectors on the devices would come loose on their own, even though that connector seemed solid. The Memory Stick Pro Duo I was trying to read fits perfectly in the correct slot (there is a card in the booklet detailing which cards fit in which slots, directions and positions), but it just got easy never connected to the MAC Pro. Needless to say I wasn't impressed.

Pros
  • SuperSpeed USB 3.0 up to 5Gbps
Cons
  • Periodicity
