Review on Park Tool Mechanic Repair Stand Sports & Fitness by David Naranjo

It broke and it was dangerous.

I don't like giving bad reviews, especially about the park because in general I think they make good products. But this broke, and it was dangerous. I built this about a month or so ago. The instructions were relatively clear and everything seemed to work well. I have used it several times. I was oiling the chain on my brother's bike today when everything suddenly and catastrophically broke, throwing the bike and the top of the rack on top of me, throwing me to the ground. The piece of plastic that holds the top and down tubes together has completely come loose. The kickstand is now practically unusable (it keeps the bike very low), but more importantly, it scared me to death and was inches from being really bad. A couple of points/questions because I'm sure people will ask: no, the bike wasn't that heavy. This is an ordinary adult steel bicycle. Not particularly easy, but certainly not uncommon. No, I didn't pull it or put my weight on it; I kept the chain free. The kickstand was set relatively high because I'm tall, but not particularly or outrageously tall (I'm not that tall, I'm only 6ft 1in and I actually set it a bit low for me). Maybe I assembled it wrong? Of course it can; All I can say is that I'm a smart guy who built my share of IKEA furniture and it only seemed to fit together in one way and on top of that it worked for well over a month before it suddenly broke. I would argue that even if it's sort of "my fault", it's not safe to create a product that can be assembled to feel right but is essentially a time bomb. Do not buy this product. This is dangerous.

Pros
  • Bike tools and care
Cons
  • Big and bulky
